HOLMES COUNTY FL: Holmes County Sheriff John Tate and Jackson County Sheriff Donnie Edenfield held a press conference ay 9 PM Sunday concerning the murder in Holmes County on Sunday Afternoon.
Sheriff Tate outlines the details which occurred in Ponce De Leon at the Rest Area. The father of children and mother meet there often to exchange the children.
Today a fight took place between the mother and father. A man who accompanied the mother of the children broke the fight up. Then he and the father of the children got into an altercation. The father shot the man, as far as scene examination could reveal, one time.
The mother ran to a vehicle and the father fired a round hitting a car and shattering the window. The mother of the children was shot.
The father then took the children and fled to Jackson County Florida.
Jackson County Sheriff Donnie Edenfield said a Sheriff Investigator spotted the man entering his driveway. Before encountering the murder suspect a relative called the Sheriff Department stating the children were okay and the murder suspect wanted to turn himself in.
Jackson County Sheriff Deputies approached with caution. The murder suspect was taken into custody without incident. At this time he is being held in the Jackson County Florida jail.
Sheriff Tate praised the 911 staff of Holmes County. First the number of 911 calls made to the center as the incident unfolded. The rolling of the emergency units, law enforcement, EMS and required services promptly and efficiently.
Sheriff Tate also said the rapid gathering of information and getting that information out to all agencies. That rapid deployment of information was what allowed the murder suspect to be taken into custody within one hour of the incident occurring.
The children did witness the altercation and shooting.
Additional investigation is ongoing. Multiple agencies are involved of which Sheriff Tate names in the press conference.
