Sheriff Valenza Gives Report On Inmate Left In Van

HOUSTON COUNTY:    Houston County Sheriff Donald Valenza is reported in the Dothan Eagle with updated information concerning the inmate being left in a jail van for several hours.


Sheriff Valenza said disciplinary action has been taken against the Corrections Deputy and he does not expect criminal charges to be made against the officer.


As a result of the incident, Sheriff Valenza said a policy has been made about the check off of the jail security can on each transport. A check off both at the courthouse and the county jail.


Sheriff Valenza, of which RSN has not asked about this incident to, said some reports were not accurate about this inmate. Sheriff Valenza said the inmate was in the van for about three hours.


The Dothan Eagle reports this inmate was not a level three inmate and was not restrained as high risk inmates as some reported.


But there is no dispute as to the van not running and the inmate left in the van for at least three hours.


We agree with Sheriff Donald Valenza in that in no way was this a intentional incident. Accidents happen each and every day.


Once found the inmate was checked by the medical unit of the Houston County Jail and once deemed ok returned to her cell.


The inmate had been transported to the Houston County Jail for court before the Honorable Larry Anderson.
