Sins of the father: Donald Watkins failed no one more than his son

Donald Watkins Sr. committed significant crimes, but the worst thing anyone can say about the man is that he didn’t cut a deal with prosecutors to protect his oldest son, Donald Watkins Jr., from prison.


The best thing anyone can say for Donald Watkins Jr. is that he didn’t try to cut a deal with prosecutors to testify against his dad — even if that loyalty was woefully misplaced.


That’s the tragedy of this father and son who were sentenced to prison for conspiracy and fraud Tuesday — Watkins Sr. for five years, Watkins Jr. for 27 months.


They will share responsibility for $13.8 million in restitution, but with the differences in their ages, Watkins Sr. is unlikely to pay much, if any, of that. Watkins Jr. will be paying that debt off for the rest of his life.
