The month of May is Small Business Month, and RSN is spotlighting those who deserve recognition during this special time.

One local business owner that deserves recognition is Kate Killebrew from Abbeville.

Killebrew is the owner of Killebrew Design in Abbeville; she has been in business for four years.

Killebrew Design is an interior and architectural design firm that offers professional design services for business owners; the business specializes in entertainment facilities, restaurants and bars, and science centers for business owners around the United States.

Killebrew worked in Dallas, Texas, for seven years at Hodges Architecture before moving back home to Abbeville. She was president of the International Interior Designers Association at Auburn University where she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in interior design; she also earned a minor in business and international studies.

Last summer, Killebrew was recognized by Alabama Business Magazine as a “Mover and Shaper” of Henry County and Houston County.

Killebrew said it took countless 12-hour days to get her business started.

She said she would tell people looking to start a business to not start until they know they are ready. She said for those still in school or college to try their hardest to be at the top of their class and to find the best business to intern with even if it does not pay the most. She also said to remember to always respect coworkers and colleagues and to do exactly what you are asked to do plus more. She said if people do this at the beginning, they will eventually have the knowledge, expertise, and industry connections to go out on their own and start a business.

“Don’t expect easy money. Life is hard.  If something sounds too good to be true, it probably is,” Killebrew said.

She believes good things take time.

Not only is Killebrew the president and CEO of Killebrew Design, she is also designing, constructing, and operating a new interactive library called The ATTA in Abbeville.

The ATTA Library of S.T.E.M. and History will welcome people of all ages; when at the interactive library, they will be introduced to the latest technologies, engage in hands-on exhibits, attend classes and events, and enjoy meetings in the hi-tech conference room.

Killebrew is excited to bring her expertise to the Wiregrass area and beyond.  She is looking forward to seeing eyes light up at the interactive library, especially the eyes of kids and students.

Killebrew gives back to her community; she is proud to call Henry County her home.

“Life is what you make of it,” Killebrew said. “Let’s make it beautiful.

The ATTA will be opening to the public in the near future but will start scheduling school tours during the 2023-2024 school year.

If you are a business owner and interested in new design, contact Kate Killebrew for her expertise and experience in working with businesses all over the world.

As always, support your local small businesses!
