Recently, Headland Middle School (HMS) started a magazine through a grant funded by Alabama Power.

The Ramblings is the school magazine that features students and their literary works.

As a former instructional coach and current HMS principal, Dr. Janie Jones wrote the grant and formed a team to implement the school magazine.

The grant helped to kickstart the purchasing of software and supplies needed to create the magazine.

A team of teachers at HMS worked together to compile essays, poems, artwork, photography, and movie reviews by the HMS exceptional needs special education class; additionally, the cover art of the magazine was created by a student.

Dr. Jones said, "The magazine came together beautifully with a well-balanced representation of Headland Middle School’s population."

When the publication was complete, teachers sent out invitations to students for a reception to debut the magazine and recognize each student for their work. Each student received a certificate of recognition for being featured in the magazine.

Riley Jane Phillips was one student who had a poem published in the magazine. She said, "It's an amazing way to show off the skills of writers like me who aren't published yet and artsy people who don't like to write get a spot in it too-- like the photographers, painters, and drawers. It's also a great way to get people who normally wouldn't have put their work in a magazine. They know most people who are going to read it, so they feel pretty comfortable about it. All in all, it's a great way to start writing or taking photos or painting or drawing."

Below is a picture of one of the two poems Riley Jane wrote that are published in the The Ramblings.

Dr. Jones said, "We really hope this will be the first volume of student work for many years to come. We hope to make this a longstanding tradition at HMS."
