DOTHAN:   " THE LOCAL PODCAST " by Charlene and Justin.


Today I learned of this podcast from Chris of Southern Man's Barber Shop. While I have never met Charlene and Justin their podcast were found to cover local happenings.


The interview I focused on was about a month ago and featured Dothan Mayor Mark Saliba.


Serving his first term as Dothan's Mayor, Charlene asked him why he decided to run for Mayor. Mayor Mark Saliba's dad, Alfred Saliba, served two terms as Mayor of Dothan. Mayor Mark Saliba said everytime he asked his dad why he served as Mayor he would reply that "Mayor was the most gratifying job he had ever done." His dad's comments and when he found out his good friend Mayor Mike Schmitz was not seek re-election made Mark Saliba decide to run for Mayor.

The Local Podcast features interviews with people in Dothan and the wiregrass and events locally. Interesting interviews learning about things around Dothan.


Dothan Mayor Mark Saliba's dad, if you ever knew him, was a quiet kind gentleman with tremendous wisdom. He would politely listen intently to what you had to say, carefully evaluating all sides, then make a decision. He was a very successful businessman.


Mayor Alfred Saliba made the decision, along with the sitting commissioners, to raise the sales tax by one cent. This was a politically unpopular decision. However by studying the financial position of Dothan and projecting the future of Dothan, and Mayor Alfred Saliba's business and financial wisdom, he did what he felt was best for Dothan and not what was best for politics.


Dothan is the 7th largest city in Alabama. Some interesting trivia learned recently, Alabama has 460 cities and towns with 67 counties.


The 460 cities and towns have over 60% of the population of Alabama. Alabama is over 50,000 square miles but the 460 cities and towns only cover 9.6% of the square miles of Alabama.


Dothan is 89 square miles of 587 square miles of Houston County. Yet over 60% of the population of Houston County resides in the city limits of Dothan.


Mayor Mark Saliba is in his first four year term as Mayor. While I have not asked my best guess is he will seek re-election as Mayor.
