ASHFORD: On Tuesday in the early morning hours after 2 AM there was a strong armed robbery in Ashford.
In Ashford you have two stores which operate 24 hours a day, 7 days per week. The City of Ashford also has two banks.
The strong armed robbery occurred when a male subject went into the store, grabbed some merchandise, and fled on foot.
Houston County Sheriff Deputies responded and the suspect was apprehended.
AS A RESULT OF RSN CHECKING INTO THIS ARTICLE ... we learned some disturbing things.
Because the Ashford City Council will not allow overtime for the Ashford Police Department, and the department is short handed, Ashford Police Chief Melvin Anderson has to close the Ashford Police Department at 2 AM until 6 AM.
The Ashford Mayor and City Council, in an effort led by Ashford Councilman Ronnie Whitehead, the overtime was denied for the Ashford Police Department. ( See minutes of Ashford City Council Meetings ).
Therefore the City of Ashford citizens and business community do not have any local police coverage from 2 AM until 6 AM.
This is not the fault of Ashford Police Chief Melvin Anderson. This rests 100% on the shoulders of the Ashford Mayor and Ashford City Council.
Ashford is in Houston County. Therefore when no local law enforcement is becomes the responsibility of the Sheriff to provide law enforcement coverage.
The City of Ashford is 6.22 square miles. Houston County has 580 square miles. Of that 580 sqaure miles, 89.7 square miles are within the City of Dothan.
The leaves the Houston County Sheriff responsible for 490 square miles of area to provide 24/7/365 law enforcement coverage. They also assist in the city limits of Dothan.
While other smaller departments across Houston County do not have 24/7/365 law enforcement coverage, the Ashford Police Department has always had 24/7/365 law enforcement coverage. But under this Ashford Mayor and Ashford City Council you are no longer provided 24/7/365 law enforcement services.
So if you suffer an issue needing law enforcement and it is delayed, DO NOT blame AshforD Police Chief Anderson or members of the Ashford Police Department. Blame the Ashford Mayor and Ashford Town Council.
