This was not an actual escape. Three persons were attempting to smuggle things into the prison. But, OOPS!!! they came up on a group of South Alabama Deer Hunters. That ended that smuggle attempt.

Three subjects from Montgomery in custody. Two were adults and one juvenile.


The three were attempting to smuggle items into the Alabama Department of Corrections prison in Clio.


The contraband did not make it but the people did!!!!


BARBOUR COUNTY:     There was an escape from Easterling Prison at Clio.


Barbour County Sheriff Tyrone Smith, Alabama Department of Corrections, ALEA - Troopers, Dale County Sheriff Chief Deputy Mason Bynum and members of Dale County Sheriff Department, Dale County-Dothan Police air unit were all involved in the search for the escaped prisoner.


As Dale County Sheriff-Dothan Police air unit was getting air borne Command notified all units the prisoner was in custody.


At this time we do not know how the person escaped or what the person was in prison for.


Alabama Governor Kay Ivey named John Hamm as Alabama's new prison commissioner. Given time Chief Warden John Hamm will get the Alabama Prison System under control.


Hamm served a four year term as Barbour County Sheriff. Which means he has experience managing a County Jail. 


Former Sheriff John Hamm worker with Former Alabama Lt. Governor Lucy Baxley during her tenure of service as Lieutenant Governor of Alabama. Former Sheriff John Hamm worked with the Alabama Sheriff Association under Director Bobby Timmons. And Bobby Timmons has forgotten more then most have ever known about being a Sheriff, jails or prisons.


At the time of John Hamm's appointment as Head of the Alabama Department of Corrections he was serving in ALEA ( Alabama Law Enforcement Agency ) under Secretary Hal Taylor as Deputy Secretary of ALEA. And working with Hal Taylor, Hamm learned a lot because Hal Taylor has done a magnificent job.


So the Alabama Prison System, I have confidence in John Hamm in leading it in the right direction.


Thanks to ALEA - Troopers, Barbour County Sheriff Tyrone Smith, Dale County Sheriff Chief Deputy Mason Bynum and the other agencies, men and women for their dedication to be on top of this situation.
