DOTHAN - HOUSTON COUNTY:   The City of Dothan - Houston County 911 Board met this morning for their regular scheduled meeting.


The board approved a request from Houston County Volunteer Fire Association for an emergency request of $ 15,000.00 for maintenance of their emergency radios and communications systems.


This was necessary because the Houston County Volunteer Fire Association has been forced to pay $ 35,000.00 a year for the past four years for a radio system. The 17 Volunteer Fire Departments and 5 Volunteer EMS across Houston County operated on the Alabama Forestry towers. With storm damage and re-banding the system would not cover the area served by the departments.


Some four years ago the Houston County Sheriff Department was going to a new Kenwood UHF radio system. The Houston County Commission borrowed the money for the system four years ago with the understanding the 17 Houston County Volunteer Fire Departments and 5 EMS units would operate on the system.


In the four years the Sheriff Department and County Commission have been unable to successfully bid the system. The County Attorney has placed many obstacles in their way.


That is why the Houston County Volunteer Fire Chief Association has to spend $ 35,000.00 a year for radio system.
