UPDATED @ 7:00 PM. Coroner’s and Deputy Coroner’s Shall Be Removed From Office For Failure To Get Training

ENTERPRISE - COFFEE COUNTY:     This week Enterprise Rescue was host to continuing education events for EMS and Coroner’s.

Today, Thursday, Enterprise Rescue was focused on the continuing education for Alabama Coroner’s.

In Alabama a Coroner must be at least 25 years of age. In addition Code of Alabama 11-5-31 mandates training for Coroner’s and Deputy Coroner’s. “A coroner or his or her designated assistant who fails to complete the minimum annual inservice training required by this article may be suspended from office, without pay, by the Governor for not more than 90 days. At the end of the suspension period, the Governor may continue the suspension of the coroner and his or her designated assistants until he or she completes the annual minimum inservice training.” 

On hand were Coroner’s and Deputy Coroner’s for Coffee County, Dale County, Geneva County, Henry County, Crenshaw County and some from law enforcement agencies such as Dale County Sheriff’s Department. No one from Houston County Coroner’s Office was present for the mandatory annual training.

Also on hand was Lina Evans, Coroner in Shelby County Alabama and President of the Alabama Coroner’s Association. Training was provided by the Alabama Funeral. Director’s Association, Jefferson County Chief Deputy Coroner Bill Yates and others. Several topics were covered such as personal protection when working scenes, Certification of Deaths, Authorizing Agents, Ethics/Indigent Burial/Cremation Permits, death certificates, Legacy of Hope and other topics.

OF SPECIAL NOTE:     The Star ID on your driver license which indicates you are an organ donor. Under Alabama law referred to as Uniform Anatomical Gift Act, the deceased family has no choice in the organs and/or tissue transplants. That decision is made by the person themself when renewing the driver license. Often times the Legacy of Hope and/or hospital never notifies the funeral home the deceased was a donor. Families will call the funeral home wondering why they have not been contacted and it is because Legacy of Hope, the Eye Bank and/or hospital has never notified the funeral home.

A lot of interesting training for Coroner’s and Deputy Coroner’s.

Under Alabama Law, should a Coroner or Deputy Coroner fail to obtain the annual training they are to be suspended from office by the Governor of the State of Alabama. Code of Alabama 11-5-31.

UPDATED @ 7:00 PM. 

CORRECTION on the Star ID. 

The STAR ID is not the organ donor. There is a red heart on the bottom of the driver license which makes you a organ donor.

The instructor changed it from STAR ID to heart at the bottom of the driver license. And if the person has the red heart on the driver license the family has no say so in the organ donations, as it was explained today.
