DOTHAN AL:While most K-12 students slept late the first week of summer vacation, 153 ball players ages 6-13 braved the 90+ degree heat and hit the fields of Wallace Community College at 8:30 a.m. Monday, June 14, for the first day of the annual Govs Baseball and Lady Govs Softball Camps.

According to WCC Athletic Director and Baseball Head Coach Mackey Sasser, the annual event is a big draw in the Wiregrass. Last year, however, the camps were closed due to the nationwide quarantine. Sasser expressed excitement in resuming activities this year: “Our baseball and softball camps have always been popular, but we have seen a tremendous amount of interest this year as kids are finally able to get out of the house after COVID.”

Lady Gov and WCC sophomores Carlee Colbert and Emma Houston, both of Dothan, agreed children need this chance to diffuse pent-up energy. Colbert worked with six- to eight-year olds, and Houston worked with 11- and 12-year-olds. Colbert says, “I enjoyed just meeting the girls and getting to know them. Of course, our first priority was making sure they were safe and learning softball basics, but we want them mostly to just have fun.”

Houston added, “I love giving back. I remember being one of them. If they continue doing as well as they did today, they can be playing here at the College someday! ”

Head Softball Coach David Russo echoed Houston’s sentiments: “Hopefully you’re looking at some potential Lady Govs on campus today!”

Kennedy Claire Birdsong, a 7-year-old second grader at G.W. Long Elementary in Ozark praised Colbert’s efforts. “Miss Carlee helped me, and I caught a lot of fly balls,” she said. “I learned just practicing and working together.”

Eight-year-old Harper Selman, a third-grader at Rehobeth Elementary School, was especially excited to have learned a new skill at her first softball camp session. “I learned how to throw to the chest. That way, you might catch the ball easier and won’t drop it, maybe,” she said.  What did Harper enjoy most about the day? “Everything!” she beamed.

The WCC baseball and softball camps ran through Thursday, June 17.
