    What it is like for someone to feel helpless?

A coworker had a seizure. The coworker looking at his fellow worker did  not know what to do but another colleague did and rushed over to render aid. When it was over the one who did not know what to do asked the colleague who did how did you learn to do that? Where did you learn those skills?

He was told the employee was a volunteer at his local rescue squad and is an EMT           ( Emergency Medical Technician ).

The one describing this story worked with AT & T Capital Services. After his colleague told him how he learned what to do, he joined a local rescue squad and became a EMT.

Today he is the Fire Chief in Columbus Georgia. His name is Salvatore Scarpa.

Scarpa describes where as a young medic he held a premature infant with oone hand and with his other hand he gave the newborn chest compressions.

He describes early one spring morning in the late 1990's in North Kansas Missouri where cradled a two pound child in his hands as he walked to the ambulance with the child in his hands. The parents trailed behind him with the father holding back the distraught mother telling her to let rescue crew do their job.

The child was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Chief Scarpa remembers the call vividly, not because the child's life could not be saved but because the parents were so thankful. Everyone tried as hard as they could to save the child, and comforted the family as best as they could.

The child's parents, going through a traumatic, tragic event, yet were so thankful and they kept lauding praises on the emergency responders who were giving all they could in order to save the child.

The Chief described WHY EMERGENCY RESPONDERS LEAVE THEIR HOMES, LEAVE WATCHING THE FOOT BALL GAME, LEAVE THANKSGIVING AND CHRISTMAS DINNER;

it is because responding to the call makes the difference.

Whether you make the rescue or not; what matters most is the person and family are not alone, helpless and abandoned to their distress.

The Chief describes, somebody was there for the family, provided that support, and were there to give every ounce of energy possible with every resource possible to try and save the child or help in an emergency situation.

587 SQUARE MILES OF HOUSTON COUNTY

In the 587 square miles across Houston County, as of Saturday, there has been approximate 17,437 fire and EMS calls. Of those, an estimated 73% are emergency medical or trauma calls.

This past Saturday night what was originally presented to Houston County 911 which was presented to Ashford Rescue was a medical call. The call rapidly developed to an extrication of a patient trapped in an augur farm implement.

Rapidly the call went from a response of two persons on the ambulance to Ashford Fire to thirty plus emergency responders, a wrecker to respond emergency, Survival Flight flown to the scene, Dothan Fire Heavy Rescue ( the semi packed with tools ) to respond.

The implement was taken apart. The wrecker was used to remove the implement from the auger to allow emergency responders to untangle the patients foot and leg from the auger.

The emergency medical responders treated the patient on the scene. The patient was loaded onto Survival Flight and flown to Southeast Health.

From a quiet Saturday night, to within seconds a medical call to a major event. Changing in seconds.

Everyone responded as one team. All working under a unified command structure. It did not matter what role you responded under, law enforcement - fire - EMS - EMA - wrecker - helicopter, all operating under one single command with one purpose - the injured.

WHY EMERGENCY RESPONDERS LEAVE THEIR HOMES, LEAVE WATCHING THE FOOT BALL GAME, LEAVE THANKSGIVING AND CHRISTMAS DINNER;

to save lives ...
