Frank Moss Gaines, III, a resident of Dothan, AL passed away on Wednesday, March 17, 2021 at a local hospital. He was 76 years old.


A private family service will be held. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Compass Lake United Methodist Church, 2914 Russ Street, Marianna, FL 32446 or to The Dothan Landmark Foundation, 431 Landmark Drive, Dothan, AL 36303.


Frank was born on January 26, 1945 to Frank Moss Gaines, Jr. and Florence Rivard Gaines in Las Vegas, New Mexico. He graduated from Dothan High School in 1963. Frank graduated from Chipola Jr. College in 1965 and would serve in the US Navy from 1966-1970. He met and married Catherine Scheibe Gaines. Frank was a photographer in the Dothan area for many years and collected many historical photographs. He worked diligently to save historical building and sites in the area. Frank loved spending time on Compass Lake and volunteering with the Boy Scouts of America, as he was an Eagle Scout himself. He was a member of Compass Lake United Methodist Church.


Frank was preceded in death by his parents, Frank Gaines, Jr. and Florence Gaines, his daughter, Caroline Harville, and by his brother, Philip Gaines.


Survivors include his wife of almost 50 years, Cathy Gaines; his son, Frank (Audrey) Gaines, IV; his son-in-law, Josh Harville; his grandson, Ellis Harville; his sister, Sara (Don Hill) Gaines.
