MONTGOMERY - HOUSTON COUNTY:      There is a bill in the Alabama Legislature that Houston County Commission Chairman Brandon Shoupe is complaining about.

The legislation puts a cap on the amount of property tax counties can get. It would put a cap of 5 percent the counties would get.

History has shown the registered voters of Houston County has multiple times voted against property tax increases. History will show those in office have attempted and cried the blues that we had the lowest property taxes than other states and we needed an  increase.

History has shown other states have lotteries and some electronic bingo. But the Alabama Legislature thinks the registered voters are way to stupid to vote on the issue. But BRANDON, the registered voters are not to stupid to vote an increase in property taxes.

Perhaps if YOU BRANDON, and D1 Curtis Harvey, D2 Tracy Adams, D3 Ricky Herring and D4 James Ivey would not waste money on things like $ 40,000.00 a year rental or prime real estate for a storage building of voting machines, sell a vehicle already equipped with emergency lights and radios just to purchase another one to equip because of knee jerk, not give double dipper D3 Ricky Herring double raises ( got 4.3% as Commissioner and 4.3% as Deputy, then 15% as a Commissioner and 15% as a Deputy, and there was a third raise he got both ) then that would help cover your issue. 

You failed to distribute copies of the budget to the media when passed. You created a slush fund for commissioners to pass out attempting to make citizens think the money was from each individual commissioner. And this slush fund has NEVER been done before until you became Chairman and this group of Commissioners.

You cut funding to the Sheriff Department and others this past budget year. AGAIN, you never supplied the media with copies.

The ASSociate Commissioners with Dothan make $ 21,000.00 a year. No auto allowance or in Retirement Systems of Alabama. The Mayor of Dothan makes $ 42,000 a year without being in the Retirement Systems of Alabama.

County Commissioners start at $ 33,000.00 a year plus $ 250.00 a month auto allowance. They get all cost of living raises given to employees. The Chairman makes around $ 90,000.00 a year plus or minus a little. And he gets the cost of living raises. And as a Commissioner and Chairman you are part of Retirement Systems of Alabama and in 10 years you are vested in the retirement system.

How is the county, who has less responsibility than a Dothan Commissioner, paid so much more?

So stop your complaining. The registered voters in Houston County does not want property tax increases. Can You Not Understand???
