HOUSTON COUNTY - COTTONWOOD:
YES and NO
This article begins:
NO, THERE WAS NO STUDENT WITH A GUN. NO, THERE WAS NO THREAT OF ANYTHING HAPPENING VIOLENCE WISE AT COTTONWOOD SCHOOL.
Yes, there was an arrest made by the Houston County Sheriff School Resource Officer, of a 19 year old who was in possession of a firearm, outside the school, while riding a bicycle, across the school property.
Cottonwood Police received a call of two males without shirts riding bicycles coming through town and one had a firearm on his side. When Cottonwood Police encountered the two their bicycle ride had made it to where they were at the school on school property.
This same person had appeared at the first high school game at Cottonwood and had a gun on his side. The Houston County Sheriff School Resource Officer took the firearm and tresspassed the 19 year old from the school property with a firearm. There was no violence, no violence indicated, no threats made.
Realize, Cottonwood School is on the main roadway that runs through Cottonwood. So riding a bicycle and being on school property is simple to do.
THIS WAS NOT A STUDENT
THIS WAS NOT SOMEONE ON SCHOOL PROPERTY MAKING ANY THREATS
The Alabama Legislature had been warned by Sheriff's and Police Chief's across the State of Alabama of issues when they changed the laws allowing open carry of firearms. There was different laws and regulations to where it is confusing.
I support carrying a firearm. I carry a firearm, everyday.
But the Alabama Legislature made it confusing. And the group of right to bear arms, which I fully support that right, pushed on changes and has ir confusing.
But what the parents and students need to know: Cottonwood Police Chief Tony Money and Corporal Justin Pearson were on top of the call of someone riding through town on a bicycle without a shirt with a gun on their side.
Houston County Sheriff School Resource Deputy assigned to Cottonwood School was on top of the man, along with Cottonwood Police, when he was located and crossed the school property.
The 19 year old, Roger Ray Epley was arrested by the Houston County Sheriff School Resource Deputy for Criminal Tresspass in the 3rd degree. The reason the arrest could be made was because he had already been trespassed by the Deputy.
My grandson attends Cottonwood. And if I felt there was a threat, a danger, or the law enforcement and school were not on top of it, you can bet every thing you own that Rickey Stokes would be raising pure mortel hell. But I am 1 million percent satisfied that Cottonwood Police, Houston County Sheriff Department, and the school had everyone safe.
You rest easy. My job is not to be liked, at all. But to tell it like it is. So people or those in power not liking me matters not to me. Telling you the truth is what matters to me. And I have spent over two hours on the phone getting the truthful FACTS and not speculation.
The CHILDREN WERE NOT IN DANGER and THEY ARE SAFE.
