RSN LONG TIME HISTORY WITH JACKSON COUNTY
My involvement, Rickey Stokes, with Jackson County Sheriff Department goes back a long time.
Sheriff Applewhite was the incumbent Sheriff of Jackson County. Applewhite was defeated by Johnny McDaniel. When McDaniel was "Sheriff Elect", I was dispatching with Houston County Sheriff Department.
Sheriff Elect Johnny McDaniel's dad was working at the Sheffield Oil Station on Highway 231 just outside Alabama inside Jackson County. Sheriff Elect McDaniel's dad was robbed and shot. He was transported to then Southeast Alabama Medical Center in Dothan.
As Houston County Sheriff Dispatcher, I dispatched Houston County Sheriff Deputies across into Florida to assist. At the time Lou Roberts was a Jackson County Sheriff Deputy on duty. I notified our Sheriff, Houston County Sheriff A.B. Clark.
This was the days before all of the instant communications devices. I kept Sheriff McDaniel informed of what was going on. When I got off duty I went to the hospital to see the Sheriff Elect. Prior to that time I had never met him.
Over the years while I was with Houston County Sheriff Department, I got to know Sheriff Johnny McDaniel. Also got to know Washington County Sheriff Fred Peel.
What I remember most about Washington County Sheriff Fred Peel, he was always dressed sharp.
I was in Montgomery at the Alabama Sheriff Association when then Geneva County Sheriff Greg Ward was passing the torch as President of the Association. It was former Houston County Sheriff Andy Hughes first Sheriff Association meeting. Just before it started I received a phone call of Sheriff Johnny McDaniel's wife and a Deputy being ambushed at Sheriff McDaniel's home. At the time it was unknown if Sheriff McDaniel was ambushed.
I went to retired Sheriff Greg Ward just before the program started and informed him. Sheriff Ward started his speech that he had some jokes but had just been informed of what had just happened and was on going with a fellow Sheriff across into Florida from Alabama. Sheriff Ward cancelled the jokes and a time of refelction on Sheriff McDaniel, thoughts and prayers.
Then had the pleasure of working around Jackson County Sheriff Lou Roberts. Getting to know Holmes County Sheriff John Tate. And a little with Washington County Sheriff Crews.
The people of Jackson County ... as someone who has watched and worked around three consecutive Jackson County Sheriff's, you have a good man serving you.
He does face a independent candidate in the November election. So Donnie Edenfield needs your vote in November. But you can be proud that your vote counted for a good and true public servant in casting your votes for Donnie Edenfield.
