FT. NOVOSEL ( Formally Ft. Rucker ): At about 1:33 PM Coffee County 911 and Ozark - Dale County 911 along with Ft. Rucker emergency services were dispatched to a helicopter crash.
The location was deep into the woods on County Road 18.
Emergency units from Enterprise Rescue, Dale County, and Ft. Novosel responded.
On arrival they found two persons in an AH 64 Apache Helicopter. One of the two, the instructor pilot was deceased and the student pilot had minor injuries.
Flat Iron Helicopter from Ft. Novosel responded. The student pilot was flown to a Dothan Hospital with medics from Ft. Novosel and Enterprise Rescue on board.
Dale County Coroner John Cawley was dispatched to the scene where the instructor pilot was prononced dead.
Dale County Sheriff Mason Bynum and Dale County Coroner John Cawley went and made next of kin notifications.
Coroner Cawley has identified the deceased as 46 year old Daniel Munger from Enterprise. Munger was a Chief Warrant Officer 3 and retired from the U.S. Army.
RSN was aware of this shortly after the incident occurred. However there are only so many helicopters in the air. Not being critical, but while Ken Curtis of WTVY wrote article at 3:15 PM and WDHN at 3:26 PM, RSN made the decision to hold it. RSN waited until Coroner Cawley notified us about 6:45 PM the next of kin had been notified.
A lot of times when we post accidents we are aware they are fatalities. However RSN leaves as a critical until family notified.
PRAYERS TO THE FAMILY.
