HOUSTON COUNTY:    Today Houston County Sheriff Donald Valenza was host to retired law enforcement for a luncheon in their honor.

Beginning with former Houston County Sheriff Andy Hughes a retiree luncheon began which is a tradition that Houston County Sheriff Donald Valenza has continued each year.

The noon luncheon was held at First United Methodist Church. Retirees from Alabama, Florida and Georgia who over the years they all worked together. Sheriff Valenza invites municipal law enforcement, county law enforcement, state law enforcement, and federal law enforcement to the luncheon.

During the years working together a bond is formed in the law enforcement community. Each officer has worked with various officers some minor and major cases. They have exchanged information that has helped solve cases in all three states and adjoining jurisdictions.

Each year some of the retired officers have passed. Some of those are retired Houston County Sheriff Lt. Leroy Wood and retired Dothan Police Sgt. Fred Fellows. An active duty Dothan Police Officer Sgt. Keith Cook passed away since last years luncheon.

It is a great time of fellowship for current and retired law enforcement to see each other, talk about what is going on in their lives and tell old stories. A lot of history in the room.

THANKS to Houston County Sheriff Donald Valenza for being host and bringing current and retired law enforcement together for the great fellowship.

This years event came during National Law Enforcement Recognition. Sheriff, it was a great way to recognize those who dedicated their lives to protect and serve and to those currently dedicating their lives to protecting and serving.
