HOUSTON COUNTY: 12:45 PM Houston County Sheriff 911 dispatched Town of Rehobeth Fire and Rescue to a "person down" call on U.S. 231 South and Decatur Road.
The persons reporting to Houston County Sheriff 911 reported a vehicle in the median with a subject slumped over the wheel.
Houston County Sheriff Deputies and ALEA - Troopers responded to the accident scene along with Fire and EMS.
On the arrival of Town of Rehobeth Fire and EMS transported one victim to the Emergency Department of Southeast Health. On arrival the victim was pronounced dead.
ALEA - Troopers is the primary investigating but as we understand this was not a motor vehicle accident. The person apparently had a medical condition which caused the victim to enter into the median.
Houston County Coroner's Office was notified and responded to the Emergency Room.
NOTICE: The victim's family resided in Jackson County Florida. When they passed the wreck the victim's family was upset thinking the ALEA - Trooper "called" the family that the victim was deceased. It was actually Southeast Health that called the victim's family and not ALEA - Troopers.
ALEA - Troopers DO NOT call victim's families. If the victim's family is not in Alabama then ALEA contacts the state law enforcement agency in the state the victim's family resides and request that agency to contact the next of kin. ALEA - Troopers go to great extra steps for face to face notification.
Understand the next of kin being upset the way they were notified, but that is not the fault of ALEA - Troopers.
