SHELBY COUNTY, Ala. - The Shelby County Sheriff Office confirms two Shelby County sheriff’s deputies have been shot and a suspect is in custody.

It happened at 3125 Bradford Place Wednesday morning.

Both deputies were taken to UAB Hospital. One of the deputies is being prepped for surgery.

Authorities say the deputies were doing a welfare check at the home when the shooting happened.

Shelby County authorities say there is no threat to the public.

This is an ongoing investigation.

7:00pm Update from Shelby County Sherriff Office

On Wednesday March 22, 2023 at approximately 9:28 am Shelby County Sherriff Deputies received a call for a welfare check in the 3100 block of Bradford Place, in the Meadowbrook area of unincorporated Shelby County. Upon arrival, deputies observed signs of forced entry. While checking the residence deputies were assaulted with a firearm, and returned fire. The 31 year old suspect from Birmingham surrendered a short time after negotiating with deputies. He is currently being held at the Shelby County Jail, without injuries, pending investigation. The deputies who were shot were transported to UAB Hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries.

The Shelby County Major Crimes Task Force is conducting the investigation, and we refer all future requests for information related to this case to the Shelby County District Attorney’s Office.

Sherriff John Samaniego stated, “I want to thank all the agencies who assisted today during this terrible attack. I ask for the public to pray for our deputies involved today, and for all of our brave men and women putting their lives on the line to keep us safe.”
