HOUSTON COUNTY:    There are 4 Houston County Commissioners and one Chairman of the Houston County Commission.


Each commissioner begins thier new term at $ 33,000.00 per year ( Dothan Commissioners at $ 21,000.00 per year ), plus county commissioner receive $ 3,000.00 per year for using their own vehicle ( Dothan Commissioners receive nothing for using their personal vehicle ), county commissioners are vested in Retirement Systems of Alabama after only 10 years of service ( Dothan Commissioners get ZERO retirement no matter how long in office ), county commissioners get cost of living raises each time they give county employees a cost of living raise ( Dothan Commissioners never get a cost of living raise ).


The Chairman of the Houston County Commission receives somewhere around $ 89,000.00 per year for being Chairman ( Mayor of City of Dothan receives $ 42,000.00 per year ). The Chairman of the Houston County Commission gets somewhere around $ 6,500.00 per year for using his own vehicle and is in the Retirement Systems of Alabama. Not sure if the Mayor of Dothan gets a vehicle allowance but gets ZERO in retirement.


The Houston County Commission meets twice  a month for voting meetings, except December and they meet once, and they meet twice a month for Administrative Meetings, except in December. The meetings, you know for the entire four years the dates of the meetings.


Today at 10:00 AM was a pre-scheduled Houston County Commission Meeting. The following is the email sent out around 7:00 AM from the Houston County Commission Administrative Assistant 


The Houston County Commission Administrative Meeting scheduled for this morning at 10:00 a.m. will be cancelled immediately after it is called to order due to the lack of a quorum. It will be rescheduled for 9:00 a.m. on Monday, August 12th followed by the Regular Meeting at 10:00 a.m.

Three ( 3 ) Houston County Commissioners, which can be the Chairman plus two commissioners, that is a quorum.


They called a study group to study "volunteer fire and EMS" and volunteers not responding.


Guess we need to form a study group why a group of elected men, paid handsome salaries and benefits, with scheduled meetings can not get a quorum to meet.
