HENRY COUNTY: Late this afternoon Henry County Central 911 dispatched a medical emergency to Abbeville Rescue.
The medical emergency was on Henry County Road 32. The patient had received extensive grease burns on his body.
Henry County 911 Central dispatched launched Survival Flight to meet Abbeville Rescue.
Henry County Sheriff Eric Blankenship and Henry County Sheriff Deputies closed Highway 431 and Henry County 45 for Survival Flight to land. The patient was transferred from Abbeville Rescue to Survival Flight.
When EMS is dispatched to burn patients the medical helicopter such as Survival Flight is automatically launced. The flight medics are licensed and trained above a paramedic. The flight medics can take over a persons breathing if required.
As described by one emergency responder on a burn call, the flight medic told the patient were are about to give you something for pain. As the Flight Medic pushed the drug it was "lights out" for the patient. Attempting to get the patient out of pain.
With the medical helicopters, Alabama Trauma Control dispatches the air unit to the nearest burn center that can accept the patient. The burn patients are not transported to a local hospital.
A great advance in EMS medical transport of patients requiring the higher level of medical care.
