DOTHAN:   08:28 AM     Dothan City Schools kicked off the beginning of the 2019 - 2020 School year this morning.

Some schools had prayer walks last evening and expected today. Not the school system organized ( ALCU - SPLC ) but parent organized prayer walks.

Did not realize until this morning the information that Dothan City Schools has attempted to get out. Searched Facebook for Dothan Preparatory School and found their facebook page - Dothan Prep Academy.  A lot of detailed information.

Dothan Police Chief Steve Parrish, Dothan Police Major Will Benny and Dothan Police Patrol Captain Todd David had extra officers on duty and staged all around the school. Dothan Police Officers were monitoring the traffic, speeds, traffic flow, and making sure the safety of all students, faculty and guests. The officers were in addition to the School Resource Officer and School Protection Officer.

The school facebook page shared videos DPA Carpool, Dothan Prep Cheerleaders, information detailing the routes to enter campus in carpool. A four lane road was constructed to bring traffic in and out of campus in carpool line from South Alice Street. As you make your way around the drivers circle in front of the gym and exit back out on South Alice Street. A unmarked Dothan Police Traffic Division unit was monitoring that traffic.

The only complaint I have received is the earliest time to drop off students is 7:50 AM. Some parents have complained about their having to be at work. The new drop off time makes them late for work. A app www.myschoolbucks.com allows parents to upload money for students.

Some issues to work through. But from the looks Dothan School Board Chairman Mike Schmitz and members of Dothan School Board, Dothan School Superintendent Dr. Edwards and school staff have worked hard to get everything ready for this day.

And from all appearances they have done a terrific job.

From Dothan Mayor to Dothan School Board Chairman. Mike Schmitz leadership has placed Dothan City Schools in major changes. Some changes well received and some not well received. But Mike Schmitz, with absolutely zero reasons to do so, moved to Chairman of the Dothan City Schools because of the education needs he saw as Mayor and changes that needed to occur.

See Chairman Mike Schmitz has no children or grandchildren in school. The Schmitz son is grown and married with no children at this time. So no one in the Dothan City Schools or granchildren in the schools. So his motives are pure and simple - make the Dothan City Schools GREAT with his energized attitude of GO! GO! GO! So what has been discussed for 30 years - something is finally being done under Schmitz/School Board/Superintendent leadership.

What is surprising how some "friends" have treated Mike Scmitz. Some who were "thought to be friends" would not even shake his hand after the changes were being made. But that is the lack of vision of some people and the lack of true friendship. Elected Office brings a friendship based on your position. Some were friends as Mayor but not as School Board Chairman. But they were not true friends.

Because again - if it was not to make things better - why in the world would someone go from Mayor to School Board Chairman? Mike Schmitz had nothing to gain by that move other than to make a difference.
