ABBEVILLE:     On Monday the members of the Abbeville City Council and Mayor voted unanimously to settle the lawsuit of Noel Valnlandingham against the City of Abbeville and former Mayor Billy Helms.

The council voted to settle the lawsuit in the amount of $ 25,000.00 plus $ 1,200.00 or        $ 1,300.00. There is a letter to be composed to go along with the settlement.

Dothan Attorney Dustin Fowler and Birmingham Attorney Heather Leonard represented Noel Vanlandingham in his lawsuit against the City of Abbeville.

There is no one that a officer had rather have by his side in a battle other than Noel Vanlandingham. A great law enforcement officer.

Vanlandingham had many opportunities to leave Abbeville and Henry County during all of the years he has been a Abbeville Police Officer or a Henry County Deputy Sheriff. But he loved Abbeville and Henry County and gave those opportunities up to remain in service to the citizens of Abbeville and Henry County.

You know a police chief of a municipality is at a disavantage, most especially in a small town. As Chief of Police of a small town, such as Abbeville, you are under the strong hands of the Mayor.

THE CURRENT MAYOR, JIMMY MONEY, WAS NOT THE MAYOR DURING NOEL VANLANDINGHAM'S TENURE AS ABBEVILLE POLICE CHIEF.

THE MAYOR UNDER NOEL VANLANDINGHAM'S TENURE WAS BILLY HELMS, WHO WAS DEFEATED IN HIS BID FOR RE-ELECTION AS MAYOR.

Therefore, this civil litigation settlement indicates the problems when Vanlandingham was Chief of Police were not the fault of Vanlandingham.

Again, remember, an "appointed" Police Chief" has to follow the commands" of the Mayor.

Currently Noel Vanlandingham is serving as a Houston County Deputy Sheriff. And listening to him on the radio and seeing him the field, Noel Vanlandingham is doing an excellant job for Houston County Sheriff Donald Valneza and the citizens and guests of Houston County.

Once the letter is released we will publish.

It is speculated, strongly, Noel Vanlandingham will seek election as Henry County Sheriff i the 2023 elections. The incumbent Sheriff, Will Maddox, is not expected to seek re-election.
