Dothan, AL - On Friday, August 30, 2019, the Alabama State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) responded to a custodial death investigation in Dothan, at the request of Houston County Sheriff Donald Valenza.

At approximately 9:50 PM, a Houston County Corrections Officer requested emergency medical assistance after observing an unresponsive inmate.  Corrections staff, Sheriff’s Deputies, and Paramedics from the Dothan Fire Department performed CPR and used an automatic electronic defibrillator, but were unsuccessful in their attempts to resuscitate the inmate.

Carlton James Mathis, 30, of Gainsville, Ga., was pronounced dead at the Houston County Jail and will be transported to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences for a cause of death to be determined.

As is standard procedure in most custodial deaths, Sheriff Valenza requested the SBI conduct an independent investigation into the circumstances related to Mr. Mathis’ death.  A copy of the completed investigation will be given to the Houston County District Attorney, and no additional information is available at this time.
