Arrest Made By Dothan Police In Saturday Shooting Murder

DOTHAN:       Dothan Police Chief Will Benny, Dothan Police Patrol, Dothan Police Criminal Investigation Division and entire team of Dothan Police Department, also Houston County Sheriff Deputies assisted, were quick on the scene and quick in obtaining information.


Dothan Police arrested 18 year old Mekhi Nasir Lawton.


There was a fight that broke out near the intersection of West Main Street and Montana Street, but on Montana Street. During the fight at least one individual produced a gun and fired into the group of two individuals hitting two victims.


One victim, 22 year old Garyoun Tyrone Fluellen of Dothan received one gunshot wound to the torso. A Dothan Police Officer immediately cleared the parade crowd to safety and rushed to Fluellen and began CPR. And the female Dothan Police Officer initiated life saving measures WITHOUT safety gear ( gloves and measures to prevent blood on her ) on her attempting to save Fluellen’s life. The officer had blood all over her afterwards. She did everything humanly possible.


A second victim received two gunshot wounds to the upper torso and was rushed to Southeast Health where he underwent surgery.


As the investigated progressed Dothan Police received assistance from the community which helped bring this case to a successful conclusion. The shooter was quickly identified, located and taken into custody. Lawton turned himself into the Dothan Police. He is under $ 1.53 million dollars worth of bonds.


Dothan Police Chief Will Benny thanks the community for their assistance. Chief Benny also praises the men and women in law enforcement for the quick response and work.


Mekhi Nasir Lawton was arrested on or about May 21,  after Dothan Police responded to the 3500 block of Ross Clark Circle to reports of a shootout.


When Dothan Police Patrol arrived on the scene in May shots were still being fired. On police arrival several subjects fled on foot and in vehicles.


The May incident shootout was between two groups on people in the parking lot of Waffle House, Montgomery Highway and Ross Clark Circle. In the May incident two customers ares and LaQuinta Hotel were damaged. No one was injured in the May shooting.


Lawton, a teenager, was arrested on two counts of Shooting into an unoccupied vehicle and was later released on bond.
