Arrest Made in the Devarta Thomas Homicide Investigation

The Birmingham Police Department reports detectives have obtained a warrant for an arrest in connection to the murder of Devarta Thomas. Devarta Thomas was found shot and killed on Monday, March 20, 2023 in the 300 Block of 74th Street North.


The suspect has been identified as:

Jamarian Carpenter, (25), B/M, of Birmingham, Alabama.



On Friday, March 24, 2023, Birmingham Police Detectives presented information on the case to the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office. After an assessment of the information, detectives obtained a warrant for Capital Murder.



Jamarian Carpenter was arrested by the Birmingham Police Department’s Crime Reduction Team; he is in the custody of the Jefferson County Jail with No Bond.



NOTE: The Capital Murder offense stems from the fact detectives believe Devarta Thomas was inside of a vehicle when he was shot.
