(Birmingham, AL; July 21, 2020) – Birmingham Children’s Theatre’s Executive Artistic
Director Brandon Bruce will be stepping down his post after leading BCT since 2016. Mr.
Bruce will be relocating to North Carolina, where his spouse has received a senior level
position with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Bruce will be replaced by Ashley
Woods, who will assume the title of Interim Executive Artistic Director in early August.
“The past 4 years at BCT have been absolutely magical for me,” says Brandon Bruce. “I am
extremely grateful to BCT’s Board of Trustees, staff, and every single artist with whom I have
collaborated since 2016. Most of all, however, I am grateful to the children, teachers, and
parents who have left a permanent mark on my life. I hope to work with BCT regularly in the
future and will forever remain a friend and ally of this organization.”
Ashley Woods, who has been with BCT since 2017, is excited to tackle her new leadership
role. "As we face one of the most unusual seasons in BCT’s 73 year history,” Woods says, “I
am inspired by the creativity of our team and energized by the possibility of finding new ways
to create and connect with our community. I am grateful to Brandon for his leadership, and
honored to carry forward BCT’s essential mission to educate, enrich and entertain the youth
of Alabama."
While the Board of Trustees is sad to see Brandon Bruce leave after such a successful
tenure, they are excited to see where BCT can go under Woods’ leadership. “Birmingham
Children’s Theatre continues to be an asset to the Birmingham community and Alabama,”
said Chris Cain, the President of BCT’s Board of Trustees. “Our area is fortunate to have
one of the nation’s oldest professional theatre companies for young audiences and is in a
select group of cities to host such an organization. The Board is excited to have Ashley
Woods lead BCT given her vision, creativity, and determination. She will further the
enthusiasm and commitment to quality of BCT’s previous Executive Artistic Director Brandon
Bruce. Brandon’s dedication to BCT was greatly appreciated and the Board wishes him well
with his future endeavors.“
