Columbia Structure Fire On South Washington Street

COLUMBIA:   At 9:59 AM this morning Houston County Sheriff 911 dispatched Clumbia Volunteer Fire, Columbia EMS, Columbia Police, Webb Volunteer Fire and Dothan-Houston County Emergency Management to a structure fire.

The single story wood frame residential structure is located on South Washington Street almost directly across from the Columbia Town Hall.

When Columbia Fire arrived, one block away, heavy smoke was coming from the residence.

Just seconds before the structure fire Webb Volunteer Fire was dispatched by Houston County Sheriff 911 to a motor vehicle accident without injuries near WDHN TV-18.

Webb Volunteer Fire was able to have enough people available to handle both calls.

The home owner had the power company connect power to the residence. That task can be done remotely. A few minutes later the structure was on fire.

The home was still standing but is a total loss.

All of the fireman did a great job with the stage of the fire on their arrival.

One of the volunteer fireman had just arrived at a  job that he was suppose to do. A job that he would have been paid to do.

As he was talking to the man who he would be doing the job for his telephone text alarm went off. He told the man he was to be working for that Webb Volunteer Fire had a wreck and a structure fire. The man said there goes the work for the day.

So the VOLUNTEER FIREMAN gave up the job he was to be paid to do to honor his volunteer commitment to save lives and property. To respond with his fir department, Webb Volunteer Fire Department.

That defines the dedication of the fire and EMS in this county. The dedication exists with Dothan Fire Department.

Outside the city limits of Dothan and in the county, the fire and EMS departments answer 49% of the volume of calls that Dothan Fire Department does.

And they do it for less than $ 1 million dollars where the City of Dothan they spend $ 14 million dollars a year, 175 employees and a support staff. 

The only support staff of the fire and EMS in Houston County is from Dothan-Houston County Emergency Management.

Dothan Fire Department does host training sessions for the county fire and EMS. 

There is no way Houston County could afford to pay the volunteer fire and EMS in this county.

One of the mandates from the "hiring Houston County Commissioners" for Dothan-Houston County Emergency Management Director Chris Judah was to work with the volunteer fire and EMS in this county. Director Judah has met that mandate.

But I wanted to express about the Voluteer Fireman who forfeited the work he would have been paid to perform today in order to honor his volunteer commitment to save lives and property.
