DALE COUNTY: On Tuesday Ozark native John Cawley received the Oath of Office as Dale County Coroner from the Presiding Judge of the 33rd Judicial Circuit, William Filmore.
John Cawley succeeds Woodie Hildbolt as Coroner. Hildbolt retired due to health reasons and Cawley served as Deputy Coroner.
Under the Hildbolt Administration, Cawley played an important and leading role with Dale County Commission Chairman Steve McKinnon and members of the Dale County Commission in making the Dale County Coroner's Office a separate, stand alone professional office.
In a building behind the Dale County Jail is where the Dale County Coroner's Office is established. The Coroner vehicle stays parked there and is always clean and professional looking. The vehicle is professionally equipped with two stretchers, and what equipment and supplies needed by the Coroner.
Inside the Coroner's Office is a morgue. A room where a body can be placed in a peaceful setting and not in the morgue itself should a family need to make identification.
All Dale County Coroner records are maintained inside the Coroner's Office.
John Cawley began his funeral home experience at age 16 under Adrian Holman of Holman Funeral Home in Ozark. It was then he thought of one day becoming the Dale County Coroner.
Cawley worked with some other funeral homes and returned to Ozark as manager of Fuqua - Bankston Funeral Home.
Cawley said Coroner has nothing to do with the funeral home. He, Coroner Hildbolt and the Dale County Commission have worked hard to make it complete away from the funeral home and independent as it should be.
Coroner is considered a part time job, but is a full time on call job.
CONGRATULATIONS to John Cawley as he is now the Dale County Coroner.
