COLUMBIA:   The Town Council members of Columbia and Mayor Rhonda Freeman met tonight in a work session to discuss the fire and EMS building.

Since the hurricane struck several years ago the men and women serving the Columbia Fire and EMS have been living in a travel trailer and the old police department building.

The council have argued over and over, did I say over and over, well ... did I say over and over ... concerning a metal building.

The insurance agent told the Mayor and Council the insurance company would insure the metal building ( take their money ) but would not pay out a claim if damaged from wind.

There are engineers who have said the building is not structurally safe. But some council members want to use the metal structure anyway.

Both the Columbia Fire Chief and Columbia EMS Captain did a good job in getting estimates on what it would cost. One of the councilman, Spencer ( sorry, do not know his last name ) did a good job in estimated costs.

But the council committed on March 2, 2021, the next Town of Columbia Council Meeting a definitive decision will be made on which option to go with. Got that commitment on video.

Following that the project should be ready for bid shortly thereafter. And hopefully the fire and EMS workers, those working to save lives and property, will be given the dignity and respect they deserve with adequate quarters to protect the equipment and the personnel with a safe place to stay and work.

In defense of these men and women, most took office in November 2020. But time to get the show on the road.
