DOTHAN:     Several weeks ago I ran an article about the power provided by the City of Dothan to Hunt's Restaurant had gone out twice recently on nights they had a big crowd.

The other Saturday night, after the Alabama football game, I went to Hunt's to eat. Only to be met by customers leaving the restaurant telling me the power was off.

Being a frequent diner of Hunt's for lunch and dinner, I knew this had happen before. In fact recently.

This particular night, the parking lot was full.

I did an article that this was enough. The largest revenue source for the City of Dothan was selling electricity. And one of their utility customers, who depends on business to make a living, and provides about 50 jobs and has for decades, had been out of business at the hands of the Dothan Utilities Department several times.

In the article, I made mention that the commissioner for that District, which is Albert Kirkland, needed to visit Hunt's and discuss the issue.

But I also sent a email to Dothan City Manage Mike West and Dothan Utilities Manager Billy Mayes.

On Monday, Dothan Utilities were at Hunt's, across the street from the restaurant, and changed out utility equipment. Equipment that should have been changed several years ago.

However, within hours of making the repairs required, Dothan Utilities is attempting to increase the electrical rates of Hunt's.

There is a future meeting.

DOTHAN CITY MANAGER MIKE WEST

I must give Dothan City Manager Mike West credit. He has been on top of it and has met with Tim Reeves, owner of Hunt's. There is a future meeting.

West has cared.

DOTHAN COMMISSIONER OF DISTRICT THREE - ALBERT KIRKLAND

Dothan Commissioner Albert Kirkland has a combative attitude and has refused to go apologize to the long term Dothan businessmen and some 50 employees. Apologizing for the City of Dothan Utilities failing to maintain their commitment to serving their customers.

Kirkland, as an elected leader of the City of Dothan should care about the business community of the entire city, most especially the people of District 3 that elected him to serve.

When 5 jobs were lost as a direct result of the City of Dothan, Kirkland was again above going to the business and working to keep the 5 jobs.

Kirkland must feel he is above doing what he is elected to do.

If he does not want to do his job as a Commissioner, he should take on another job, like choking chickens or something.

But if Kirkland is going to be a commissioner, he should care about the business community. And about the customers of the largest revenue source of the City of Dothan - Dothan Utilities.

NOT GOING TO WASHINGTON D.C.

Each October the Mayor and Dothan Commissioners go to an annual event in Washington D.C. to support our military. The event is a show of local support for the military.

The local community support goes along way to show Washington that Ft. Rucker has community support.

According to sources within the bowels of the Civic Center, this year Commissioner Albert Kirkland is not going and failing to show his support for Ft. Rucker.

Hopefully the other commissioners can carry the dead weight on the commission and make Washington know that we locally fully support Ft. Rucker Alabama and what it means to the wiregrass.
