Many parents choose to read Dr. Seuss’s books to their toddler-aged children as first-time books. Not only are these books simple to read and whimsically illustrated, their stories pass along the gift of imagination, since they are in no way limited in their fantasy elements. The language in the books, furthermore, goes a long way to facilitate the language development in children, especially the phonetic abilities stepping stone to a successful reading career. If you look closely at a Dr. Seuss book, “The Cat in the Hat” and “The Grinch Who Stole Christmas,” you will notice it is written in rhymes. Most children learn reading more quickly with rhymes because they remember rhymed words more easily than they do non-rhymed words. Saying these rhymes also encourages children to read out loud, which teaches them how to sound words out in order to pronounce more advanced words. Moreover, Dr. Seuss books contain make-believe words that children love to say aloud, such as ‘wocket” and yottel.” Through his surreal stories, Dr. Seuss books encourage children to use their imagination, which encourages brain development. The Alfred Saliba Family Services Center’s Early Head Start program has many Dr. Seuss books available for the children to experience. Each year on his birthday, March 2nd, our Early Head Start program celebrates his contributions to early development in children by reading his books in the classrooms and doing various activities during a weeklong celebration in his honor. The Early Head Start program, http://www.dothanfamily.com/ehs.html, is a federal program serving families in the Houston County area. The program assists families in meeting the needs of their growing infants and toddlers, meeting family goals for success and self-sufficiency and identifying community resources that are available to them.
