On Sunday February 9, 2020 at approximately 9:29 PM hours, while on patrol in the area of Lafayette St. and Borden St., a Marianna Police Officer observed a vehicle traveling east on Lafayette St. with inoperable tail lights.
The officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle in the area of Wynn St. and Lafayette St. Upon the officer activating his emergency lights and sirens, the vehicle accelerated quickly, and turned south onto Wynn St.
The vehicle led the officer on a brief pursuit through residential neighborhoods, while failing to yield at multiple stop signs and intersections at a high rate of speed.
It eventually collided with a curb and became disabled at the intersection of Washington St. and Oak St. The driver quickly exited the vehicle led the officer on a brief foot pursuit.
Upon deployment of the officer’s non-lethal stun gun, the subject was apprehended and placed under arrest.
The driver was identified as Eugene Mckinnon. The officer noted a strong odor of alcohol emitting from Mckinnon’s breath. The officer also noted several cold alcoholic beverages present in the vehicle.
It was later determined that Mckinnon had a suspended driver’s license and several prior suspensions of his driver’s license for his refusal to submit to alcohol test. Due to his driving actions and the presence of alcohol, Mckinnon was asked to submit to a test for alcohol/drug.
Mckinnon refused. He was transported to Jackson Hospital. Upon medically cleared, he was transported to Jackson County Correctional Facility to await appearance.
