On the evening of January 08, 2020 a Deputy with the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office Patrol Division was traveling west bound on Highway 90 and entered the turn lane at the intersection of Highway 71 S. Once the light turned green the white Ford F150 in front of the Deputy failed to move and remained stationary through the light cycle.
When the Deputy exited his marked patrol vehicle to check on the subject, he was found to be asleep behind the wheel and the vehicle’s transmission still in drive. At this point Deputies were able to wake the driver, identified as James Coffelt, and get the vehicle into park. Coffelt appeared groggy and had slurred speech as if he may have had a medical emergency. After determining no medical emergency existed Coffelt was asked to step out of the vehicle.
As the Deputy conducted a pat search, for officer safety, Coffelt made the excited utterance he had a sack in his right pocket. Coffelt was detained and upon further investigation the sack contained a substance which Coffelt stated to be K2/Spice post Miranda. The substance was also believed to be just that based upon the training and experience of the Deputy. The suspected synthetic cannabinoid was later weighed and returned a true weight of 7 grams. Coffelt was placed under arrest and later transported to the Jackson County Correctional Facility to await first appearance.
