DALE COUNTY: Dale County Probate Judge served as Dale County Commission Chairman since Dale County was formed. There was a change that separated the Commission Chairman and Probate Judge, making the offices two distinctive offices.
The first and only Dale County Commission Chairman separate from Probate Judge has been Mark Blakenship.
Yesterday when the polls closed for Mayor of the City of Ozark Mark Blakenship was the victor. He will be leaving the position of Chairman of the Dale County Commission.
The Governor of the State of Alabama, Kay Ivey, will be appointing the Dale County Commission Chairman.
Currently Steve McKinnon serves as a Dale County Commissioner. He was not re-elected as a Commissioner and after the November 3rd election McKinnon will vacate the commission post.
McKinnon has served as President of the Alabama Association of County Commissioners. In that position it gives you an opportunity to know the Commissioners across the entire State of Alabama, to know the legislators all across the State of Alabama, and to be very acquainted with the legislative process. How to make things move.
Something most people do not understand about county government verses municipal government. The county government has no "home rule". Something that needs to be addressed with the Alabama Legislature.
But not having home rule in a county government requires most of the things a county commission wants to accomplish or address has got to pass through the Alabama Legislature. A municipality can pass an ordinance where a county has to get legislation passed and get it through the Legislature.
Dale County sits in a great position. One of the most powerful members of the Alabama House of Representatives is Steve Clouse. He lives in Ozark and is Chairman of the General Fund Budget for the entire State of Alabama.
With that great position, Dale County would stand in a greater position if Alabama Governor Kay Ivey would appoint Steve McKinnon to fill the vacancy of Chairman of the Dale County Commission. He knows Dale County, he has the contacts across the State of Alabama, he knows the legislative process and the key Senators and Representatives across the state to get things done.
Steve McKinnon is a good man who has a servants heart. He loves serving the people of Dale County and I think would do a great job as Chairman of the Dale County Commission.
