Today June 8th I placed this Orange and Blue (War Eagle ) floral arrangement at the Angel Of Hope for my Best Friend...Sam Hathcock.
There are so many things I would like tell you about Sam and about our friendship but I don’t have enough Kleenex in my truck to wipe that many tears away from all the memories that are going through my head right now.
One thing that is ringing in my head the most right now are the many fishing trips we took together to the St. John’s River in Florida.
We would leave early in the morning pulling my boat on his Yukon and always waited til we got to the other side of Tallahassee to crank up Ray Charles My World CD. I can hear us now singing My World together ( out of tune of course )as loud as we could .
We had no idea how fitting those lyrics would become in more recent years....
“My world, your world, our world, one world
I hear the cries of the people
From every single corner of this earth
Where’s the love, the compassion
Where’s the hope what’s the future worth”
Sam I wish we could sing it together right now....GOD I Miss You My Friend.
I’d like to share with you the story of how Sam found out he had prostate cancer.
In August of 2004 Dan Fogelberg announced that he had been diagnosed with Advanced Prostate Cancer and published to his fans to get checked regularly and not wait like he did.
In 2007 Dan Fogelberg died from the diesease.
Fogelberg had been my favorite singer/musician since the 1970’s and I finally got to see him for the first time in concert at Chastain Park in Atlanta and Sam went with me.
From then on Sam loved Dan Fogelberg!!
Sam saw the public announcement from Fogelberg about not waiting to get tested like he did so thankfully Sam went and got tested.
A few days later I got a knock on my door and when I opened it there stood my friend Sam.
He said come outside I have something to tell you. So we stood in the driveway leaning on my car and he said ...” I’ve got prostate cancer. You need to get tested too. “
I’ll never forget that day.
Sam fought it heroically for years but on July 19, 2020 the fight left in him was gone.
God wrapped his arms around my best friend and took him Home.
I miss my friend so much... every year Sam and his great friend and partner Jay Pate ( Hathcock’s Roofing & Remodeling ) donated to the Angel Of Hope.
Many times he would tell me how proud he was of me for doing it.
Never in a million years did I ever think that I would be placing flowers at the Angel Of Hope, that he loved so much, for my best friend.
Absolutely nothing in life is guaranteed...I’m reminded of that more and more as I get older.
Tell your loved ones and your friends how much you love them...before the opportunity to tell them fades away.
I’m going to post My World by Ray Charles on my Facebook for you to listen too and if you want to sing along with me for Sam.
I still have the voicemail Sam left me a few weeks before he passed away and his last words on the message was..” I love you Steve “
Sam I love you too
Happy Birthday My Friend
