Mother's Day is a celebration honoring the mother of the family or individual, as well as motherhood, maternal bonds, and the influence of mothers in society. It is celebrated on different days in many parts of the world, most commonly in March or May.

While West Virginia was the first state to officially adopt the holiday, others followed suit. Proclamation of the day by the various states led Representative J. Thomas Heflin of Alabama and Senator Morris Sheppard of Texas to present a joint resolution to Congress that Mother's Day be observed nationwide.

If the day was called “Mothers' Day,” it would mean the day belonged to all mothers—and you would need to buy a lot more gifts! By using the name Mother's Day, the holiday indicates that it belongs to each individual mother, just as Jarvis wanted.
