Henry County Commission Regular Commission Meeting and Work Session

HENRY COUNTY:   The Henry County Commission met this morning in the work session and regular county commission meeting.

Chairman David Money discussed roads and not enough money to go around to pave all of the roads that need paving in Henry County. The COVID money, in order for it to be spent on roads, you would have to prove the road condition is related to COVID.

The commission voted to reschedule the July Commission Meeting. That meeting falls on the dates of the Alabama Probate Judge’s Conference and Judge Money needs to attend that meeting. The commission approved changing the July meeting date to July 5th.

The Henry County Commission declared May as Mental Health Awareness month. Judge Money said some 10 years ago he did not give mental illness much thought. But after dealing with mental illness as Probate Judge, it is a tremendous problem.

The Henry County Commission also named May as Children’s Mental Health Awareness month. Judge Money said a lot of children face a lot of issues.

The Henry County Commission appointed Chairman David Money as a member on the Legislative Committee for the Alabama Association of County Commissioners.

The Henry County Commission appointed Mercedes Wilson to the Southeast Alabama Regional Planning and Development Commission.

The commission approved selling two Henry County Sheriff Department vehicles by sealed bids or GOV DEALS. A 2013 Chevrolet Tahoe and 2008 Ford F-150.

The Herndon Family donated the Herndon Building across from the Henry County Courthouse. The building was appraised at almost $ 1 million dollars. The Henry County Commission plans to move the Henry County Commission, Henry County Probate Office and other offices to that building. Chairman Money wanted to do something special to honor the Herndon family and will make a one time $ 10,000.00 donation to buy some equipment for a non-profit animal rescue programs the Herndon family is very active in supporting.

Under old business on action on Emergency Medical Services outside the municipalities and in the county. Henry County Commissioner Jason Hudspeth is Chairman of the committee. Appointed to serve with Commissioner Hudspeth are the Mayors of Headland and Abbeville, two EMS representatives, Matt Hatcher – the Assistant Henry County Emergency Management Director. This committee has several recommendations. Commissioner Hudspeth has asked for a work session with the committee and county commissioners to discuss each proposal to figure what best serves the citizens of Henry County.

The EMS proposal was tabled until the next meeting giving time for a work session.
