HENRY COUNTY - ABBEVILLE: Henry County Sheriff Will Maddox is headed to a raise for the Henry County Sheriff Deputies. Sheriff Maddox is also headed to more deputies.
Last evening the Abbeville City Council reaffirmed their vote to move dispatch to Headland creating a joint Henry County-Headland and Abbeville 911 Center. The move will make all departments able to communicate with each other. Over the past the law enforcement agencies in Henry County could not talk.
The previous Abbeville City Council Meeting the measure was approved. There was a possible technical issue in the meeting where you are required to have unanimous consent to add a item to the agenda. Abbeville Mayor wanted to make sure all was done correctly so the item was added to the agenda this time before the meeting.
The Abbeville City Council voted 5 to 0 on Monday approving the measure.
Henry County Commission last week voted to join Abbeville City Council and move all Sheriff and Fire Communications to the joint center.
This move will save Henry County about $ 160,000.00 per year.
Last Henry County Commission Meeting the Sheriff asked for additional deputies and to increase the pay structure. The Henry County Commission could not afford a separate dispatch center, the additional deputies and increased pay structure.
Sheriff Maddox was mad the commission did not approve the additional deputies and pay structure. Sheriff Maddox also was not in favor of a joint communications center. In fact last Henry County Commission Meeting the Sheriff chewed one county commissioner and vowed to politic against him because he did not support the request.
The Commissioner realized the need for more deputies and the increased pay. But the material was presented to the commissioners a hour or so before the meeting. And with Sheriff Maddox fighting the move into a joint communications center, there is just so much money to work with.
The Henry County Commission did what was right. They moved to join Abbeville and get all communications into one center. That left $ 160,000.00 a year to work toward's additional deputies and increased pay structure.
By law the commission has to pass a balanced budget by October 1. It is expected there will be additional deputies and pay increase by then, if not before then.
So in the end, whether he realizes it or not, Henry County Sheriff Will Maddox won for his deputies and the service to the people.
Henry County ( Headland, Abbeville, all fire and EMS ) won. It was just plain STUPID for more than one communications center in Henry County. APPLAUSE to the Abbeville-Headland and Henry County Commissioners for doing what was needed long ago.
APPLAUSE to Sheriff Maddox for asking for more deputies and pay increase.
APPLAUSE to the Henry County Commission for having the courage to say, Sheriff, we can not do both of a stand alone communications center and more deputies and more pay. But we know a way.
