Holmes County: Spotlight on Recovery: Josh Hoover

HOLMES COUNTY:A vital component of combating the presence of drugs in our community is understanding that behind every drug arrest is a story - a story of someone who has lost their way and a family that has been torn apart by addiction.

Sheriff John Tate’s focus on assisting those struggling with addiction to find lasting recovery is just one step in healing families and giving those stories a chance to have a happy ending. Arrest itself is not an ending. Instead, it can be a new beginning.

Each month, we share a story from individuals who have successfully completed a drug rehabilitative program through the Holmes County Sheriff’s Office and are now enjoying a new, fulfilled life of recovery.

Their journey. Their words. A message of hope for us all.

The March 2023 Spotlight on Recovery story comes from Josh Hoover.

My name is Josh Hoover, I’m 41 years old and I grew up in Bonifay, Florida. I came from a 25-year addiction of drugs and alcohol. My addiction caused me to destroy everything that was in my path. I was selfish and only cared about myself and what I could get from others.

Before I came to Dunklin Memorial Church I had almost destroyed my health. My heart was only working 30% and failing. I overdosed three times and died twice. My mental state was deteriorating to the point of having constant paranoia and anxiety. My liver and organs were so bad that the doctors told me that I only had a couple years to live.

I had destroyed every relationship around me, and no one wanted to be around me. I pushed all my immediate family away form me. I abandoned my daughter in the process, destroyed a ten-year marriage and I was isolated from myself, everyone else and God, to I come to a point of hopelessness and tried to commit suicide.

I was in and out of jail and programs and ended up in prison from 2008-2010. I didn’t care at the time if I was locked up or not. I spent most of my twenties in jail. I ended up in almost every jail in the panhandle, and I didn’t care what my family thought about it.

In 2019 by God’s grace, mercy and love he spared my life and snatched me out of the dark place I was in and restored my heart back to 100%. He reconciled me with my daughter after three years and reconciled me with all my immediate family. Today I have healthy relationships with all my loved ones.

Today I’m currently at Dunklin Memorial Church in servant leadership training and I teach here helping all they guys that come in to find a relationship with the Lord and really take a look at themselves and their attitudes. I am so grateful the Lord is using me today to be a servant for him and his kingdom.

None of this would have been possible if it wasn’t for all the prayers from my sister Amber and my brothers (Sam Taylor) that are here and my loved ones. Thank you, Lord, for saving my life and giving me another chance
