OXFORD – Houston Academy scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning Thursday to beat Gordo 4-3 in Game 2 of the AHSAA 2023 Class 3A State Baseball Championship Series.
The Raiders’ dramatic come-from-behind victory set up game three in the best-of-3 series. That game was expected to get underway at 12:45 p.m. today at Jim Case Stadium / Rudy Abbott Field on the campus of Jacksonville State University.
Gordo (33-6), which won Game 1 Wednesday night 2-1, broke a scoreless tie with a single run in the top of the sixth, but Houston Academy (27-8) tied the game the bottom of the sixth. The teams were still tied going into the eighth inning and had starting their starting pitchers still on the mound.
The Greenwave scored two runs off HA starter to go up 3-1.
Houston Academy, coached by Tony Kirkland, wasted little time scoring three runs off Gordo starter in the bottom of the eighth. The Raiders put together three hits and the Greenwave committed two errors as Houston Academy struck fast. HA opened the bottom of the inning with a single, with the next batter reaching based on fielder’s choice and both runners moved up a base due to a throwing error.
Houston Academy had a bunt for a hit, a single to center and a hit batsman to break the tie at 4-3.
Congrats to Houston Academy Raiders for winning the 3A State Baseball Championship!
