If you want to use an absentee ballot for the upcoming election, there is still time to submit your application.
Tuesday, October 29: Last day for Absentee Election Manager to process any absentee ballots received in the office by mail.
Thursday, October 31: Last day voters can return in person their regular absentee application. No one, not even a family member, can return another person's application by hand (except a medical emergency designated voter named designee).
Monday, November 4: Last day a voter may hand deliver his or her absentee ballot to the AEM. No one, not even a family member, can return another person's ballot (except a medical emergency voter named designee).
Election Day, Tuesday, November 5: Mailed ballots must be received in mail no later than noon. Voted medical emergency ballots delivered by the voter's designee must be received no later than noon.
WHO MAY APPLY:
Voters meeting one of these criteria can vote absentee:
- The voter expects to be out of the county or the state on Election Day.
- The voter has any physical illness or infirmity which prevents attendance at the polls, whether they are within or outside the county on the day of the election.
- The voter expects to work a shift which ahs at least 10 hours which coincide with the hours their polling place is open.
- The voter is a student at an education institution located outside the county of their personal residence.
- The voter is a member of, or spouse or dependent of, the armed forces of the United States or is similarly qualified to vote absentee pursuant to the Federal Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act.
- The voter has been appointed as an election officer or named as a poll watcher at a polling place other than their regular polling place.
- The voter is a caregiver for a family member to the second degree of kinship who is confined to their home.
- The voter is incarcerated in prison or jail, but has not been disqualified by conviction of a felony involving moral turpitude.
MEDICAL EMERGENCY: Any registered elector who requires emergency treatment of a licensed physician within 5 days of an election may apply for an emergency absentee ballot and may vote by returning the absentee ballot no later than noon on the day of the election. The physician has to certify the circumstances of the emergency.
BUSINESS EMERGENCY: Any registered voter whose name appears on the poll list of qualified voters may vote by an emergency absentee ballot if they are required by their employer under unforeseen circumstances to be out of the county on an emergency business trip on Election Day. The voter must apply for an emergency absentee ballot no later than close of business one day before the election.
RULES:
Absentee ballot applications must be accompanied by a copy of current, valid photo identification (unless the voter is exempt from the ID requirement). Failure to provide ID will result in your ballot becoming a provisional ballot.
Each application must be mailed separately. Multiple applications cannot be mailed in the same envelope, even if voters live at the same address.
Completed absentee applications must provide the Alabama residence where the voter is currently registered to vote, even if the ballot is to be mailed to another address where the applicant voter receives mail.
Voters must complete all the information on the Affidavit of the absentee voter envelope.
The Affidavit must be signed or marked by the actual voter and witnessed by two witnesses 18 years old or older or by a notary public or other officer authorized to acknowledge oaths prior to being delivered or mailed to the Absentee Election Manager. Failure to do so will result in your ballot not being counted.
