BAY COUNTY FLA: Bay County Sheriff Tommy Ford announced today the arrest of a Panama City man for his part in a scheme to defraud an elderly victim of $30,000.00. Although the man initially received the cash from the victim, BCSO investigators were able to return all of it back to the victim.
The BCSO received a call from the 73-year-old victim reporting she believed she had been scammed. She had given the cash to the scammer but, as she began to think about the whole incident, she realized she had been scammed.
The victim stated she had received an email which appeared to be from a legitimate computer security software company. The victim was told she overpaid for her subscription and was owed money back. Through a financial transaction, the scammer was able to manipulate the victim’s account to make it appear the refund she was given was more than what she was owed. The scammer then told the victim to withdraw the overage and meet his associate at a local store and give him the overage amount. Shortly thereafter, she did meet with the associate, and provided him with approximately $30,000.00 in cash.
Based on the description of the suspect provided by the victim, BCSO Financial Crimes Investigators from the Criminal Investigations Division and Bay Real Time Crime Center (BAYROC) began collecting video and attempting to identify the suspect and his vehicle. Because the victim called st once, realizing she had been scammed, and the response was immediate by Financial Crimes investigators, the suspect was identified, located, placed into custody, and all the victim’s money recovered within hours of the crime being reported.
MDZohair Anjum, age 29, was transported to the Bay County Jail where he was charged with Grand Theft in Excess of $20,000.00. Anjum was also found to be in possession of a controlled substance and was also charged with Felony Drug Possession. He will go to first appearance in front of a Bay County Judge today.
Sheriff Ford would like to remind all Bay County citizens that internet scams are now an unfortunate part of everyday life. If you suspect someone is trying to scam you online, cease contact with them and report it to your local law enforcement agency. Do not provide money to them, in person or electronically.
