A massive manhunt was underway in eastern Jefferson County Monday night after someone fired shots at Birmingham police officers in Crestwood.
It all began shortly before 10 p.m. in the 700 block of Georgia Road when East Precinct officers on patrol spotted a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed, said Birmingham police spokesman Officer Rod Mauldin. The officers tried to pull over the motorist, but he did not comply and the chase was on. It was during the initial portion of the pursuit that the suspect fired on officers. No one was injured.
The chase traveled along interstates 20, 59 and 459 before the suspect exited on Deerfoot Parkway. It wound through the Clay area along Old Springville Road before the suspect crashed on Surrey Lane. He then fled on foot into a wooded area.
Multiple agencies joined Birmingham police in the search including the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office and Trussville police, Birmingham also notified Argo police and the St.Clair County Sheriff’s Office to be on alert.
Update: 3:23 a.m.
BPD spokesman Rod Mauldin said Birmingham officers did exchange gunfire with the suspect. Authorities said that exchange of gunfire happened on Crestwood Boulevard in front of the old Century Plaza. The State Bureau of Investigation responded first to that scene, where there were multiple shell casings in the roadway. They are now on scene at the Old Springville Road location and have taken over as the lead agency, which is standard for an officer-involved shooting.
