OKALOOSA COUNTY:On March 26, 2024 Deputy Adam Fitchett was called to the Cinco Bayou Bridge for a welfare check. Multiple callers reported a woman standing on the water side of the bridge railing, clearly distressed and in a precarious position.
One individual, Zachary Litgen, didn’t just call but stopped and went to her aid, offering the young lady comforting words and encouraging her to reconsider her actions.
He provided a calm presence and showed genuine concern, emphasizing there are better alternatives to her temporary problems. He was able to maintain her attention, which was critical to the outcome of this incident.
When Deputy Fitchett joined him at the scene, he worked to talk to the lady while assessing the situation and the best way to get her to safety. Despite their efforts, she continued to express intentions of self-harm and show signs she might jump.
Recognizing the urgency and seriousness of the moment, Deputy Fitchett took decisive action. When the lady was distracted by Mr. Litgen, he swiftly reached out and grabbed her arm, then with the rapid assistance of Mr. Litgen, they pulled her over the rail to safety. Their efforts prevented the individual from potentially suffering irreparable harm or even death.
Deputy Fitchett’s actions on that day exemplify the highest standards of duty and compassion expected of law enforcement officers. His quick thinking, effective communication, and intervention directly resulted in saving a life. As a result, he’s receiving the OCSO Lifesaving Award! This is Deputy Fitchett’s second Life Saving Award.
Zachary Litgen’s actions were also instrumental in helping prevent a potential tragedy. We want to formally recognize and applaud him for his work to ensure the safety of a vulnerable citizen. He exemplifies the spirit of human kindness and assistance, reflecting great credit upon himself. Zachary Litgen has earned the OCSO Community Service Award! Well done, gentleman!
