DOTHAN: History was made in Downtown Dothan this morning. A 20 minute Dothan Commission Meeting.
Commissioners Janesky Fleming and John Ferguson were not present this morning for the meeting.
NO MENTION OF BUDGET OR POLICE PAY RAISES BY ANY COMMISSIONER OR MAYOR OR CITY MANAGER.
Commissioner Kevin Dorsey had no comments. Commissioner Albert Kirkland welcomed Tommy Wright back to the workforce of the City of Dothan traffic light management. Commissioner Beth Kenward had no comments. Commissioner David Crutchfield echoed Commissioner Kirkland's welcomed Tommy Wright back to the Dothan workforce. Crutchfield said there is a lot of work ongoing in Dothan and for the public to please be patient.
Mayor Mark Saliba said Dothan City Schools back in session beginning this morning. Mayor Saliba said he was personally at Dothan Prep and the road looked good and things were flowing well. He asked the parents and citizens to please be patient with the changes. Mayor Saliba praised the Dothan City School Board for the work they have done and accomplished and to please keep them in your prayers.
Dothan City Manager Kevin Cowper reminded the Commissioners - this Saturday Dothan Fire Department will be featuring GO FOR THE GOLD at Miracle Field at Westgate Park. A event to create awareness of childhood cancer. The 5K run begins at 6 PM.
CM Cowper reminded of August 22 ( Thursday ) meet the Dothan High School WOLVES Football Team, 6:30 PM, at Rip Hewes Stadium.
CM Cowper reminded August 26 ( Monday ) the first game of the Junior Varsity Team of the Dothan Wolves will be at Rip Hewes Stadium.
CM Cowper reminded August 30 the first game of Dothan High School WOLVES at Rip Hewes Stadium as they play Wetumpka/
CM Cowper announced Monday, September 2, is Labor Day and the City of Dothan Offices and workforce will be off. Anyone that your garbage collection is on Monday the makeup day will be Wednesday.
On September 2 Labor Day both Dothan Police and Dothan Fire will take the holiday and be off. No wrecks, robberies, burglaries, assaults, heart attacks, strokes, dog bites, gas line breaks, car fires, structure fires. Only the Community Relations Officer ( who will start at a salary of $ 18,000.00 per year more than a police officer ) will be the only one working.
The above statement is not true!!!!
If the Community Relations Officer was on board now ( salary range starts $ 18,000.00 a year more than a police officer ) the Community Relations Officer would be off September 2 LABOR DAY. But Police and Fire will not be off. They are never off and someone is always on duty on the streets, at the fire stations and the 911 Center. My statement is about as stupid as the actions of the Dothan Commission with exception of Commissioner Ferguson and Kenward.
NOTE: The Community Relations Officer is not a DOTHAN POLICE OFFICER or part of the Police Department. This position is a creation of Former City Manager Mike West and Dothan Personnel Director Delvik McKay. The Dothan Personnel Board is answerable to no one and they set the salaries.
The application for a Lounge Retail Liquor License, Class 1, on or off premises, fir Salon De Las Estrellas, 3815 Ross Clark Circle, by James M. Brown was denied for lack of second to the motion. Commissioner Kevin Dorsey made the motion to approve and no second was made. The owner, James Brown of Montgomery, went to the podium and Mayor Saliba asked him to tell the Commission a little about the place. No Commissioner asked Brown a question at all and no comment made as to why no one would second the motion.
All other items were approved. And in 20 minutes the Dothan Commission Meeting for August 20, 2019 is now history.
