OPELIKA AL: At 1:20 PM on October 4, 1993, Sergeant Roger Motley was flagged down by a citizen at the Pepperell Corners Shopping Center who said a child needed help. Motley parked behind a burgundy Mustang and approached a small child who was standing with a white male. Sgt. Motley spoke to them outside the vehicle for a few minutes when the man reached in the car and pulled out a weapon and fired at Motley. The men exchanged fire as a white female approached Sgt. Motley from behind and fired at him as well. Motley was able to return to his vehicle and radio for help and as he was driving away, the woman fired into the back of his vehicle. Sergeant Roger Motley succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at 2:15 PM. He paid the ultimate sacrifice through his dedication to protecting and serving our community and we will forever be thankful for his 18 years of service to the Opelika Police Department.
