OKALOOSA/WALTON COUNTY, FLORIDA: The Walton County Sheriff's Department gave out tips recently on how to prevent people from being a victim of scams.
Today, a man using a phone number 850-601-1102 was impersonating a lieutenant from Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office and scammed a victim out of $500 after telling her she would be arrested within 72 hours for missing federal jury duty.
The scammer asked for payment via CashApp or Venmo, and the victim agreed.
If you have any doubts, ask a friend, or call your local law enforcement agency.
The following are tips they shared:
1. No deputy or police officer will ever call asking for money in place of a warrant, missing jury duty, or to bond anyone out of jail.
2. No legitimiate organization will take payment via CashApp, Venmo, gift cards, Western Union, bank transfers, etc.
3. Do not answer numbers you do not know.
4. If you answer the phone, refer to #1, and hang up!
