SLOCOMB-HARTFORD:     One day this week a quorum of the Slocomb City Council bounded up into the Slocomb Fire - EMS building, walking in bedrooms waking up the night shift personnel.

Not knowing how late they were up. They opened ambulances and looked in saying they were doing an inspection. Which was never authorized in a legal counsel meeting.

Today both Slocomb and Hartford were hit hard with EMS calls. Several of those councilman get the pages for the calls.

Since 8:39 AM both departments have been slammed with medical calls. They requested lift assistance from the scene in Geneva County. Not seen one of those three City Councilman who barged into the station invading the bedrooms of those men and women who had worked while they slept.

Not only did the ambulance medics need lift assistance on the scene but they were required to call for Dothan Fire Department Engine 8 ( Highlands ) to meet them at the hospital for assistance. Not one of those three Slocomb City Councilman came to help.

The Slocomb Fire-EMS units even got a medical emergency during the Alabama and Texas A & M Games. And they responded but none of the three councilman went.

When the budget was approved recently the councilman refused to give fire and EMS a raise. They make $ 9.00 a hour and asked to be increased to $ 11.00 a hour. The fire and EMS have to be certified as a EMT or above To serve on the ambulance. To drive the ambulance they have to attend a school to be certified. They have continuing education. And many are certified firefighters who work at Slocomb Fire-EMS.

These men and women have a terrific Fire Chief, Kyle Hovey. He is a retired Fire Captain of Dothan Fire Department who has brought the fire and EMS service to great levels of service for the people of Geneva County.

These men and women are locked in the back of the ambulances with COVID positive patients. Realize, there are no hospitals in Slocomb. So they are required to transport patients to (1) Geneva (2) Flowers (3) Southeast Health (4) Medical Center - Enterprise.

Each one of the members of these EMS and Fire do not hesitate to crawl into the ambulance and do all they can do to treat these patients regardless of the medical needs to include and not limited to COVID.

The Slocomb City Council bought new police vehicles and hired additional police officers. Not saying they do not need what they asked for.

But the trio of Slocomb City Council were out of line and possibly violated the Alabama Open Meetings Law. And without a doubt violated the men and women of the Slocomb Fire - EMS.

And they did cause a Lieutenant to say he did not need this disrespect and he quit. He loved Kyle Hovey and working with and under the supervision of Chief Hovey.

But he was not about to work under these three council members and the manner of which they talked to the Slocomb Fire - EMS last meeting.

Today Slocomb Fire - EMS has responded to 11 EMS calls.
